The Science behind Brazzein
Brazza™ Safety & Allergen-Free Promise
Because the best sweetener should also be the safest.
The Basics
• Nature-made: Brazzein and thaumatin are protein originally found in the West-African oubli fruit and miracle berry. Unlike most proteins (which taste...well, like a protein bar), these proteins taste very sweet.
• Superior Quality: We source our brazzein from a reputable FDA-reviewed manufacturer, Bestzyme, which produces it by precision fermentation. Every batch is analyzed by an independent lab to ensure top quality. (CoA available on request)
Recognized as Safe
by Regulators
- “Generally Recognized As Safe” (GRAS) acknowledgement by the FDA: In 2024–25 the U.S. Food & Drug Administration reviewed multiple independent GRAS notices for brazzein and issued “no questions” letters—its highest level of comfort that the ingredient is safe.
- Global momentum: Food-safety agencies across the world, from Australia/New Zealand to the EU, are approving sweet proteins for use as food. A large number of studies show sweet proteins to be safe and digested to aminoacids like any protein (e.g. whey in workout shakes).
Allergenicity: vanishingly low risk
- Very different from known allergens: Comparison with over 2'000 known food allergens show brazzein to be completely different from known protein allegens. (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov, fda.gov)
- Destroyed by digestion: Even though brazzein is very stable in food, intestinal digestion destroys it. (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov, researchgate.net)
- Made without allergens: Our manufacturing involves no dairy, soy, gluten, or nut derivatives.
Digestion & metabolism—just another protein
1
Unfolds in stomach acid
Stomach enzymes chop it up
into small fragments.
2
Pancreatic enzymes
in the small intestine reduce fragments to even shorter peptides & amino acids.
3
Absorbed & reused
exactly like any other dietary protein. (researchgate.net)
Safe to Friendly Gut Bacteria
A 26-week study + FDA review found no disruption of gut microbial diversity, composition or function at doses far exceeding expected human use. (MDPI). Brazzein is broken down before it can even reach gut bacteria.
Reviews of natural sweeteners note that sweet proteins, unlike most synthetic sweeteners, do no change the intestinal microbiota. (PubMed)
And finally, the tiny amounts needed to sweeten food and beverages (less than one thousandth of an ounce) are not a significant source of calories (less than 0.1 calorie per serving).
Bottom line for consumers
- Non-toxic
- Non-allergenic
- Does not disrupt the gut microbiome
- Naturally derived, quality-tested, and FDA-approved
Enjoy a new and better way to add sweetness in your diet with complete peace of mind—Brazza™ is as safe as the protein in a workout shake, only far more delicious.
